Live - New Music Festival - 10.25.22

about

In 2022 Free Static was invited by Eugene Difficult Music Ensemble to participate in their first annual New Music Festival - a three day event featuring guest artists working in experimental performance and composition. For the Open Air Light and Sound event on the first night, Free Static joined Aine Nakamura, Isaac Paris, Mystic Elevator and M Denney. The event was illuminated by projection-mapping performance by video artist Robert Long.

For this performance Free Static disassembled and reorganized elements from a rare meditation record by produced and released by a new age organization from the 1970s. The record contained a mix of guided meditation, ecstatic chanting and some middle-of-the-road jazzy blues jams. Free Static's improvised dialogue with the samples, using Eurorack and Buchla synthesizers, disrupts attempts at enlightenment with mediated drones, time-warping delays and overlapping loops. There is no forward movement towards a higher self. Only a circular pull towards uncertainty, decay and collapse.

The opening moments of the recording picked up the sounds of a real-life hippy drum circle playing across the street as Free Static began. This regular weekend event is a mimetic vestige of Eugene's counter cultural past. Drum circles happen because they always have. From the outside there appears to be no unity or community seeking a shared higher purpose. People dance while families are at the adjacent day-time market. As the light dims the crowd shifts. Chemicals merge. Fights break out. Tweakers are drawn to the sounds like moths to a porchlight. Cops bust somebody. Drums fall out of sync. Eventually everyone packs up and goes home so they can return again the following weekend, no more enlightened than they were before.

Free Static's work is the sound of lost, broken ideas morphing to survive. Like collapsing ideology taking on new language in order to fool a new generation. Or the last frequencies sent by a dying star, recorded by a forgotten satellite, only to be played for the void.
